Why does the sun and season timing matter for a roof and envelope?

A roof is not one surface. It is a set of planes facing different directions, and each plane takes a different load from sun, rain, snow and wind. In most of the continental United States, a south-facing slope dries fastest and shows granule loss and sealant failure first, while a north-facing slope stays damp longer and grows moss, algae and lichen. Asphalt shingles are commonly rated for 15 to 30 years, but the rating assumes ventilation, correct flashing and no repeated freeze-thaw cycling at the eaves. Trenchless replacement, which pulls or pushes a new liner or pipe through the old alignment, avoids excavating a driveway or a mature lawn, but it has limits: sharp bends, collapsed sections and offset joints can rule it out, and the method still requires an access pit at each end. Work on sewer lines without a licensed professional carries real risk, including damage to gas and water lines in the same trench and the possibility of leaving the system worse than it was found.

How do roots get into sewer pipes, and what stops them?

Roots enter through the smallest opening available, usually a joint, a crack or a failed gasket, and they enter because the pipe offers water, oxygen and nutrients in a steady supply. Trees do not need to be old or large to cause damage; a young maple or willow planted over a lateral can reach it within a few years. The signs are familiar: multiple slow drains in the house at once, a toilet that backs up when the washing machine empties, and a sewer smell in the basement.

Camera inspection is the only reliable way to see the condition of the line. It shows the location of the intrusion, the material of the pipe and whether the wall has deformed. From there, the options are mechanical cutting of the roots, chemical treatment that inhibits regrowth, or replacement of the affected section. Cutting alone is a recurring cost, because the roots return. Replacement, whether open-cut or trenchless, removes the cause.

Prevention is mostly about placement and water. Avoid planting large-rooted species within ten feet of a sewer lateral, keep the line clear of heavy vehicle traffic, and repair small leaks before they become entry points. Brick pavers need cleaning and re-sanding of joints when weeds and moss appear, usually once a year. Interior work, such as flooring, a home office surface or carpet replacement, is best scheduled after the water problems are solved, not before, because renovation priority follows cause and effect.
